WHY KALEDICSCOPE?!
Does your theater company have a show they’d like to bring to compete? There are a few requirements:
1. Your theater must be a member of AACT (American Association of Community Theatres) and of the WSCTA (Washington State Community Theatre Association) in order to compete.
2. Your theater must have performed at least 2 productions as a theater. You do not have to have performed your competition piece prior.
The goals of Kaleidoscope and AACTfest are:
- To provide an optimum learning experience through festival entry, which affirms, supports, and nurtures community theatre companies as they strive toward excellence in theatrical productions.
- To stimulate and inspire community theatre companies to strive for the best work possible and to recognize them for their achievement through an appropriate adjudication process.
- To provide a learning experience in artistic, technical, and management areas for people in attendance through performances, adjudication, and workshops.
- To develop enlightened and discerning audiences for community theatre.
Many criteria are in place to achieve the aforementioned goals. Among the most significant are:
- All theatre companies must meet the same eligibility standards and requirements.
- Maximum time limits are 60 minutes performance time; 10 minutes set-up time and 10 minutes strike time.
- Qualified and impartial adjudicators are essential to the success and fairness of the festival process.

THEATRE RETREAT RECAP
Thank you for all who joined us at our Inaugural Statewide Theatre Retreat. It was a time to make new friends and reconnect with familiar faces.
Many of us enjoyed swapping stories and sharing our perspectives on the state of theatre right now in WA.
Diana George, led a spectacular workshop on “Structured Growth for Nonprofit Theatre”. We are so thankful that she graciously bestowed her knowledge and expertise. We learned a lot of invaluable information on how to take our theatres to the next level. The topics of planning, legal documents, fundraising, staffing, and more were all addressed. |
Besides getting educated, we had a lot of fun swimming, making smores by the campfire, even admiring the rabbits, pigs and chickens that called the camp home. We got to take a pontoon boat ride in the South Puget Sound. This was a relaxing reprieve, enjoying the sea breeze and taking time to slow our busy lives down. The food was delicious, the homemade woodfire pizza being the highlight meal.
It was a relaxing weekend and new way to connect with fellow thespians from around the state. The weekend left many of us ready to go back to our corner of the the state rejuvenated and energized, filled with ideas we had conjured up at the retreat.
We hope more of the WSCTA join us at future retreats and events. It was a weekend to remember.
Share your theatre stories with us so we can feature them in an upcoming newsletter. Send your photos, stories, events and articles to our Vice President, Christy Valle - [email protected] |
